Our body has a system called the endocannabinoid system. Within this system are substances called endogenous cannabinoids. They are called this because of their similarity to compounds that are found in the cannabis plant. CBD and THC mimic and augment the effects of these compounds.
The endocannabinoid system plays a very important role in the regulation of many of the physiologic processes that occur in our bodies including mood, energy, intestinal fortitude, immune activity, stress, hunger, how we perceive pain and many, many more.
When this system does not function correctly we begin to see the signs of disease develop. It has been shown that the endocannabinoid system is dysregulated in some way in almost all pathological conditions. This makes modulating the endocannabinoid system a potential therapeutic option for numerous diseases.
